The Government of Tanzania is actively participating in the ongoing sessions of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) in Geneva. 

Notably, the delegation includes the Director General of Personal Data Protection, Dr. Emmanuel Mkilia, (right) and Mr. Mohammed Mashaka, Director of ICT Ministry of CIT, who are attending in as official capacity to represent Tanzania’s interests and contribute to the global discourse on data governance.

Pursuant to UN General Assembly Resolution 79/1, which calls for the establishment of a multi-stakeholder working group on data governance, the CSTD Bureau, on 17 March 2025, decided to form a diverse group comprising 27 member states and 27 non-state stakeholders. This working group aims to facilitate comprehensive discussions on data governance at all levels, aligning with development priorities and fostering international cooperation.

This session marks the second in a series of meetings designed to prepare the upcoming progress report for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting brings together representatives from various sectors, including government, academia, civil society, the private sector, international organizations, and the technical community.

The session is being held in Room XVII of the Palais des Nations, with remote participation available via Zoom for those unable to attend in person. Participants attending remotely will receive access links upon approval of their participation.

Dr. Emmanuel Mkilia and Mr. Mohammed Mashaka presence underscores Tanzania’s commitment to advancing data governance and protecting personal data rights at the international level, fostering collaboration and sharing best practices in this crucial domain.
